Spamming DP With Articles to Get Ad Clicks…You Naughty Spammer!

By Christian Little • Aug 27th, 2008 • Category: Stupid People

Here’s a fun example of stupid people that have been flocking to DP over the years. This particular form of spam has been happening for years, but lately it seems to have kicked up a few notches.

That above image is a screen shot of the Marketing forum when I logged on this morning. You’ll notice that I’ve highlighted six out of the first nine threads in the forum. If you had opened any of those threads, you’ll get presented with a 600+ word article that discusses the topic.

Seem fairly harmless right? After all it’s related to online marketing most of them, so why not?

I can already seem somebody at the back of the class saying “But they aren’t spamming links, it’s not spam!” Technically that is correct, it’s not link spam - it’s advertising spam (keep reading).

The main reason is that the articles are crap. If you actually read any of them, they are written as articles, not forum posts. There is no questions being asked, it is merely a general statement about some market. The content itself is usually vague and useless.

The second reason is that it doesn’t invite people to discuss ever. They are simply posted and left.

The third reason is that people are doing this because they hope to get clicks on the adsense box at the top of the screen. Everybody knows that DP is a revenue sharing forum, so people have devised this method of spamming the board with useless articles that talk about making money online, with the only intent of generating ad revenue rather than posting anything helpful.

Do yourself a favor and don’t be stupid like these people. You’ll just end up getting banned/ignored/flamed on the site.

  1. First thing first—> you don’t seem to have the “Notify me of followup comments via e-mail” wordpress plugin. You know I genuinely want to come back to your blog to read what you have replied but you don’t have that plugin. It is hard to remember all the URLs daily or visit every feed in my feed reader so this kinda plugin helps a lot. Please install that quick..

I have seen many such spammers in DP and the problem is many of the DP members themselves start asking various questions to these people thus giving heads up to their thread. I guess the mods will have to be a lot stricter than what they currently are.

  2. Yeah I was planning to fix that at some point in the near future, maybe even tonight I’ll stick that plugin in.

As for the mods at DP, I wish they could do more. But I bet they are all busy dealing with spam reports and banning people, so I don’t know if they can really do much more. They’re great people, but I just suspect they are overloaded as it it.
