A website called Custom Theme Design recently released a wordpress theme called Guzel, and the first version was pretty impressive. It has some really neat built-in features, and the actual design is very nice.

However not too long ago they took all the feedback and released a new version called Guzel PRO (and no, it’s not a paid theme despite the ‘PRO’ part added to the name).

Some of the really cool features of this theme include:

• The PRO version has this nifty language customization page where you just change the words into your native language, and it instantly converts the theme into your langauge.
• They re-wrote the built-in “the_content” function for wordpress so it will display the first image in the post on the homepage without any extra coding.
• The entire site uses some very cool AJAX coding, such as the block on the top-right corner that displays various posts by certain condition (i.e. Newest, Popular, etc).
• It has Feedburner built right into it (sweet!)
• Did I mention it’s a free theme?

Now there are a few downsides that I’ll warn you about:

• Modifying the theme is a pain in the ass. I pulled it apart line-by-line to add a lot of custom things to it on a new site I built with it.
• I found the language switching code didn’t work for some reason. I suspect it was because of some misconfiguration on my part, as everybody else it seems to work just ducky with.

Overall the actual look and feel of the design is very nice. It’s easy on the eyes, and the navigation structure is fairly straight forward. Additionally, there’s very little graphic/distracting elements which makes it ideal for people to find you actual content rather than be distracted by the shiny bits.

If you are looking to build a really sleek and sexy blog, this is definately one of the better themes I’ve ever seen and highly recommend it.

The standard comments page and dashboard in the WordPress admin panel will give you some very basic information on your comments, such as how many comments you’ve received, how many are awaiting moderation, and how many Akismet has blocked (if you use that plugin). But I wanted to take this a step further, I wanted to see detailed stats on the comments made to my blog, not just a few basic summary figures.

So here is the Comment Stats plugin:

It basically breaks down statistics on your blog comments since the launch of your blog, and displays it as a monthly report. This very simple interface shows you the following information:

• Period is the Month and Year. Let me make it clear here – this plugin will show you the stats for every year and every month since your blog has been in operation, not since you installed this plugin. It doesn’t collect this information, it uses the internal data that WordPress keeps in it’s database, as such you can install this right now and see stats on comments from 6 months ago if your blog existed back then!
• Approved Comments is how many comments were posted and approved on your blog (Approved meaning not blocked by a spam filter and not deleted – an Approved comment is one that actually appears under your blog posts).
• Posts Discussed tells you how many posts during the specific period received at least 1 comment.
• Commentator Names tells you how many different Names (anchor texts) were entered by your commentators.
• Emails tells you how many unique email addresses were entered by your commentators.
• URL’s tells you how many unique URL’s were entered by your commentators.
• IP’s tells you how many unique IP addresses were used to leave a comment.
• Most Commented Post(s) shows you which of your posts received comments (and how many) during the period.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I want to make this very clear so there is no confusion – it is common for a post to receive comments over a period of several months (maybe even years). If you have a blog post like this, expect to see the blog post show up in each period under the Most Commented Post(s) section each month, listing how many comments it received during that specific month.

IMPORTANT NOTE #2: I am going through the process of getting this plugin listed in the offical WordPress Plugin Directory, and once it is listed you can automatically download upgrades to the plugin without having to check this site (woohoo!). However I have never done this before, so until it gets approved and entered into the directory, please check back on this posting from time to time for updated versions.

If you spot any problems with the stats, or would like to see additions made to it, please comment on this posting. What is Wrong with the Version Number?

The initial version of this plugin is “One”, not “1.00″ that you typically see with other plugins. Why? Because I felt like being different, but once this plugin gets approved by WordPress.com I may shift it over to the more conventional version standards.

Revision History
“One” released on Sept 25, 2008. It has the groundwork for future upgrades and displays a single report, showing statistics for all months. Upgrades are planned for the near future.

Installation Instructions

It’s so easy! Just follow these steps:

1. Download the zip file below, unzip it to your “wp-content/plugins” directory.
2. Login to your WordPress Administration panel, click on Plugins, and click on Activate next to the “Comment Stats” plugin

Once you have followed those two simple steps, just go to the Comment Stats page, which will appear under the Comments section.

Now I should issue some sort of warning here, if your blog is over a year old and gets hundreds of comments each month, it may take a minute or two for the stats page to generate. It also depends on your server, as all the data is pulled in real time.

For you PHP geeks out there, the speed of this plugin is 1+n mysql queries, where n is the number of months that your blog has been in operation. So a blog that has been up for 7 months will run 8 queries in MySQL to generate the stats, and if you get 100+ comments per month you are looking at processing 7 months x 100 comments = 700 rows of data from MySQL. To be honest, unless you have several thousand comments this shouldn’t really be an issue at all.

Yeah, Yeah, Where’s the File Already

The link is below, but before you download it I want to reiterate a few points on this:

1. This is a beta version plugin. I haven’t found any bugs, but chances are you good people will. If you do, please leave a comment below (be sure to include your email address in the right field so I can contact you if needs be).
2. Until this plugin gets approved by the WordPress Directory, please check back every 2-3 weeks for updated versions. I will make a huge update to this page once it has been moved to the official directory, after which point you can do automatic upgrades!
3. Lastly, this plugin was only tested on Wordpress 2.6.0+ versions. I do not expect it to work on earlier versions (besides, you should always have the most up-to-date installation).

So the first step is to go into your WordPress Admin, then click on Design, then click on Theme Editor. This lets you edit the PHP/HTML coding of your WordPress theme (NOTE: Your theme files need read/write access for this editor to work, otherwise you have to edit the files directly through FTP or some file manager that your hosting company gives you).

Next you need to open the specific template file, which in this case will be the ‘Main Index Template’ (it may have a slightly different name on older versions, pre-2.0 WordPress I believe it was just called ‘Homepage Template’).

While I’m on the topic of older WP, this probably won’t work with anything pre-2.0 WP. I can’t remember if the older versions allow for Custom Fields or not, so upgrade to the latest version of WordPress before putting in this hack.

Once you’ve loaded the template, look for the code that displays the posts on the homepage, usually within a special WP loop that starts with this code:

if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post();

That’s the start of the WordPress loop, a built-in set of code that tells WordPress to loop through the last 10 posts on your blog (or however many you have set it to in your Options).

Once there, you simply need to find the code that creates the link to each post (which is just a basic anchor link that called the the_title() and the_permalink() functions. Replace that specific line of code with the following:

(If you are reading this post in an email, the above block of code probably won’t show up as I’m using an iframe to display it. So you’ll have to come to my site and view this posting to get the PHP and HTML code to do this hack).

What this code does is tell WordPress to display an image next to the post title on the homepage if the Custom Field “Image” has been declared on that specific post. If there is no “Image” custom field set, it just displays the anchor text without the image. That makes this safer than most plugins, as just about every plugin that offers this assumes you have set an Image and will display the IMG code in HTML, which can result in several broken images on your site.

So once you’ve put this code in, create a new post on your blog to test it. Simply create a test post, add some content, and then scroll down to the “Custom Field” section and add “Image” as the Key, and the filename as the value, example:

Once you post it, it will display whatever image is stored in “/images/wordpress.jpg” if you use that specific example. I use the “/images/” folder on my site for this, which has about 20-30 different icons for posts now.

NOTE: Please be sure to check the HTML coding that I’ve given you above and edit it to fit your site. Right now it will encapsulate it all in an H3 tag and use the “/images/” directory as a base. You need to change this information if it doesn’t look on your site.

NOTE 2: Don’t delete the ” that you see sitting on a line by itself. If you read through the code above it you’ll realize it has to be there to complete the URL declaration for the image code. If you take it out, you will get some HTML errors.

As I mentioned earlier, there are several other methods of doing this and plugins available, so here’s a few other ways people have demonstrated how to to this:

Anyways, two things for everybody today: 1) This blog is now a do-follow blog!, and 2) I’ve got some really good WP Plugins listed below that every blog should use.

Do Follow means that anybody who comments on this blog will now get a valid link back to their website, and it is search engine friendly. I’ve tried this a few times on this site through it’s various incarnations, and it’s done fairly well as long as proper spam protection methods are setup.

But today’s post is about four fun WordPress Plugins that everybody should use on their sites, and here they are:

1. Akismet – comes standard with all new installations with WordPress. It’s an advanced spam fighting system that scans comment content and runs it through some advanced database to determine if the comment is shit or something good. Very useful, easy to setup, and let it handle most of your spam issues. Be sure to check the comment it flags sometimes, as Akismet has been known to flag non-spam comments.
2. All In One SEO Pack – it’s actually quite hard to find a really good SEO plugin for WordPress. Overall I’ve found the all in one pack to be the best overall – it auto generates your page descriptions, you can set the homepage title/keywords/description tags, and it has several options to customize how your meta tags are generated. It’s probably not the best option, but overall it works well enough that you don’t need to worry about it once it’s running.
3. Do-Follow – this plugin enables links in your comments from your visitors to be search engine friendly. There are other plugins that do the same, but most of them don’t get updated whereas this one gets an update with every new version of WordPress, so it’s the most reliable one.
4. Gravatar – is a way of creating an avatar for yourself that will appear when you post on blogs. This is more of a fun feature, and I try to use it on all my blogs (this site is using this plugin – try it out if you want).

None of these plugins are essential to make your blog popular, but they just add some extra features and funbits that people tend to like. If you’re really anal about just using plugins that will help promote your site, then only Do-Follow and SEO Pack should be setup, but if you are like me and want people to actually enjoy posting on your site – get Gravatar setup.
