Web Hosting and the Difference between Bandwidth and Data Transfer
By Christian Little • Mar 10th, 2010 • Category: ARGH!For anyone that has ever been in need of web hosting or has used it, then data transfer and bandwidth are likely to be familiar terms. Even though you might be under the impression that these two things are one and the same, it is important to realise the difference. However it is a common mistake that people make.
What is Bandwidth?
The term bandwidth is what is used to explain the amount of data at any one time can be transferred. This is an important issue in relation to web hosting because having too low an amount of bandwidth will hamper the length of time your pages load for your visitors.
What is Data Transfer?
Data transfer refers to the actual amount of data being transferred at any given time. Although this sounds exactly the same there is a subtle difference. If you use a bus journey as an example then the bandwidth would refer to the amount of people that the bus can actually hold at any one time, whereas the data transfer would refer to the amount of people who are actually on the bus on any one time.
How will this Influence my Site?
When choosing your web host you should consider your bandwidth and data transfer needs. Not having enough bandwidth will mean that your web pages will take too long to load. Inadequate amounts of data transfer will mean that your visitors will have to wait their turn before downloading this data. If you have many visitors at any one time this could be a major problem.
Making sure that you choose a good web host can mean the difference between success and failure for your website. Look at the amount of data transfer and bandwidth being provided as these are elements that you will really need to consider.
Anybody thinking about venturing into internet marketing should have hosting set up beforehand. Newbie’s can find, though, that the web hosting world can be rather confusing. An example of this could be coming across reseller web hosting or even linux web hosting when you are looking at different hosting plans.
