Learn That Fitness Takes More Than 12 Weeks

By Christian Little • Mar 19th, 2010 • Category: ARGH!

In the recent past, a woman working out at the gym talked about participating in a weight loss competition. This is a woman who worked out inconsistently and had inconsistent results. You can read about the importance of being consistent in a weight loss forum.

While not obese, she definitely had weight to lose. The look she had was peculiar: she seemed excited about the chance to win a prize.

Since she wanted me to help her, I got out my skin fold caliper and measured her at 27%.She was about average for being over 40.

I concurred when she said that she wanted to be 19%: it’s a good place to be.

Making this reduction would take a long time since most people can only lose .5% per week on average. After training intensely for 12 weeks, she had impressive results: she exceeded her goal by 2%. She even did six pack ab exercises.

She was so happy and excited, it was wonderful to see. Suddenly, however, she stopped coming to the gym.

I tried to call her, but she didn’t answer. She didn’t return my calls either.

Months later, she came back to the gym, but had gained most of her weight back after failing to win the contest. She started exercising again, but only periodically. This type of temporary success followed by failure happens a lot.

It is possible, however, to have progressively better results year after year. It just takes more than 12 weeks.I have a few suggestions that will get you going.

1. Avoid starting diets. Don’t define your nutrition plan as starting something that will sometime stop: your eating habits should change for life.

2. Create a schedule that will help you keep your goals once you have acieved them.

3. Make only a couple changes at a time. Trying to do too much too fast will make your goals unsustainable.
