When buying your diamond, you should ask for a certificate called the Diamond Grading Report. The Diamond Grading Report is created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Because the certificate comes from the independent GIA, you know that your diamond dealer will not tell you anything but the truth about the diamond. Sometimes you will have to pay for this report but it is normally only a small fee and it is defiantly worth the cost as you can use it to get yourself a better deal or to help you avoid buying a diamond of less quality.

If you buy a high quality diamond like a 0.75 carat round brilliant cut loose diamond, and you decide to sell it later, having the Diamond Grading Report will make life a lot more easier. In fact, you may have a very hard time selling your diamond without it!

When it comes to insuring your diamond, you will need absolute proof of the worth of your diamond, the Diamond Grading Report will give you that absolute proof and a copy of it should be given to your insurance company just incase your diamond should ever be stolen.

If your diamond dealer seems reluctant to provide you with a report, avoid him like the plague. If he wants to charge you a lot for the report, remind him that it should only cost a small fee.

The Gemological Laboratories of the GIA are the oldest, most trustworthy and respectable labs in the country. Only accept the Diamond Grading Report from them, some diamond dealers will try to use other Gemological labs, if your diamond dealer will not issue a Diamond Grading Report from the GIA, then walk away from the deal.
